Pope Leo XIV has been issued a fierce warning of artificial intelligence, declaring it a threat to humanity that requires urgent global action, including strict rules for great technology.
“Today, the Church offers its finding of social teaching to respond to another industrial revolution and innovations in the field of artificial intelligence that presents challenges to dignity, justice and human work,” Leo told a wide Cardinal in the Vatican in one of his first ancestors.
Leo’s comments, which were submitted during his first official audience with the Cardinal College in the Synod Vatican Hall on May 10, were reported by Wall Street Journal.
This week the Vatican is expecting leaders from firms including IBM, Cohe, Anthropic and Parantir for a great summit on his ethics.
Leo is expected to issue a written message, but has not yet held private meetings with technology CEO.
Microsoft President Brad Smith is expected to meet Vatican officials later this month, and Google is discussing a future audience with the Pope.
By 2040, artificial intelligence is projected to automatically or significantly transform 50% to 60% of jobs globally, with some estimates suggesting up to 80% can be affected by 2050.
McKinsey predicts that 30% of US jobs can be automated by 2030, while Goldman Sachs rating up to 300 million jobs worldwide – about 25% of global jobs – can be affected.
Work intensity roles such as construction, maintenance and capable trade are expected to remain more resilient.
Only a few days in his papacy, the first American Pope made it clear that catching with him will be essential to his agenda.
Naming himself after Pope Leo XIII -XIX century “Papa of Workers” -leo XIV signaled a direct link between the unrest of the industrial era and today’s digital revolution.
The 267 Pope is positioning itself as a moral counterbalance to technology companies that have spent years trusting the Vatican.
The church under Francis and now Leo has advanced to the legally binding global regulations to restore the non -controlled development of it.
“Leo XIV wants the worlds of science and politics to address this problem immediately without allowing scientific progress to progress with arrogance, damaging those who must undergo its power,” Cardinal Giuseppe Verraldi told the journal.
The impetus for the supervision of him continues the work of Pope Francis, who became increasingly vocal in his later years regarding the dangers of developing technologies.
Francis, who once joked, knew how to use a computer, gradually evolved in a main voice in the subject – warning of a “technological dictatorship” and calling it “fascinating and terrible”.
In 2020, the Vatican published “Rome’s Call for Ethics”, supported by Microsoft and IBM, among other things. He sought to develop to design systems that respect privacy, human rights and non -discrimination. But some technology giants, including Google and Open, have refused to approve it.
Francis’s involvement grew after the infamous image generated by him in a white Puffer jacket went viral in 2023, demonstrating the potential for him to distort reality.
He later warned the world leaders that “car elections” should not replace human decision -making.
Now, Pope Leo – who has a mathematical degree and a deeper knowledge of technology than his predecessor – is expected to take church advocacy a step further. Vatican officials and clergy see a moral imperative to act as a global conscience in the face of what they see as a potentially dehumanizing force.
“These tools should not be demonized, but they have to be adjusted,” Cardinal Versaldi said.
“The question is, who will fix them? It is not credible for them to be adjusted by their manufacturers. There must be a superior authority.”
