A former American flight attendant has lifted the lid and exposed a request passengers make and why most cabin crew members will refuse.
Speaking on TikTok, Kat Kamalani, who worked as a flight attendant for six years, shared a video on the social media platform – where she has nearly 1 million followers.
Talking about overhead locker compartments, Kamalani said that often passengers will ask a flight attendant to lift their bags and store them properly.
However, it is not actually part of their job description to do so.
“Crazy fact – everyone thinks it’s the flight attendant’s job to lift your luggage into the bins, but it’s not,” she said.
“Our airline, and a number of other airlines, tell you not to do it because you get so many injuries with it. And you are not even covered.â€
White flight attendants can offer assistance, lifting heavy bags on behalf of a passenger can lead to injury and in the US, may not be covered by insurance.
In order to properly fit luggage inside the overhead cabin, Kamalani said there is a sign that will almost always help.
“Most airlines have these little cards that tell you how to store your luggage — so it’s going to be vertical or horizontal,” she said, adding that if you can’t lift your bag over your head — you shouldn’t. wait for a flight attendant to do that.
Thousands of commenters quickly responded to the advice, with some saying they always step in to help when needed.
“I just ask a man to do it? What else are they for,” joked one.
“I’m a flight attendant and no, not all of us are going to help because that’s still lifting/carrying half a bag which can hurt your back,” added another.
“Your flight attendant will NOT help you. This is against many policies now, said a third.
