Fitness influencer hits back at critics of candid talk about sex on her podcast: ‘It shouldn’t be so taboo’

Fitness influencer Steph Claire Smith has applauded critics who shamed her for opening up about her sex life on her podcast.

During a chat with her Kicpod co-host and Kic co-founder Laura Henshaw, Smith described a recent experience with her husband when she introduced a new sex toy into the bedroom.

After receiving criticism for her harsh admission, the 30-year-old entrepreneur told news.com.au that she believes the discussion of sex should not be removed from the paper just because she is in the public eye.

“I think the subject of sex should not be so taboo,” she said. “But if you don’t want to adapt to that kind of content, that’s your prerogative.

“Our podcast has always covered women’s health, wellness, and our personal lives, and sex falls into all three of those categories.”

Smith and Henshaw have been podcasting for over five years, and their episode content has naturally evolved over that time, as has their confidence in speaking candidly about their personal lives.

“Laura and I have built the confidence to talk about who we are and what we stand for, and to cover the topics we find important,” Smith explained.

“We’re two women in our 30s, very comfortable with ourselves, our bodies and the idea that people know we’re sexually active.”

The most common compliment they get about their podcast is that their listeners say they feel like they’re friends with the two women.

“It’s like we’re all sitting in a coffee shop talking about things they would talk to their friends about – or wish they could!” she shared.

“They may feel embarrassed to bring up certain topics — until they hear us talk about it.”

A listener recently told the couple, “Honestly, your conversations have made me more comfortable being open with my girlfriends and that has changed everything.”

“This is why we do what we do!” she said proudly. “Whether it’s talking openly about sex or my recent ADHD diagnosis, the conversations Laura and I have on the podcast are helping people feel less shame and isolation about what they’re experiencing.”

Her comments came after she shared a clip from one of the podcast’s latest segments on her Instagram.

“The other night Josh and I were having sex and we decided to use a vibrator along with it. It’s not an unusual occurrence,” she began.

“We were just trying some things, and I was trying something a little different with myself… I decided to use it on my belly button.”

Claire Smith said she was fiddling with it and before she knew it, the toy had ended up a little further than expected, instead of just out.

“It was up there,” she admitted, “and I’m not usually into things up there, so I was kind of like, ‘okay, cool, that happened!’ and Josh looked at me like what’s going on.”

“I’ll admit, it felt really good, I just went with it, I let it go, I was like there’s no way I’m going to get it out now. Then I went up to the top and we both had a great time.

“We make ourselves laugh because after… this thing is still inside my butt and I didn’t want to take it off because I couldn’t get the off button. So I had to do the old stooped walk to the toilet and shower with this thing still inside me.

“I wanted to share it because it was so funny.”

However, many commentators did not think so.

“What happens to your husband in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom,” one person claimed. “Where is the respect and privacy these days?”

“Oh god. Keep it to yourself,” said another. “This over-the-top sex talk is so over the top.”

“I just don’t find (this content) very appealing and I definitely wouldn’t want my daughter to listen to this kind of content. Sad because I really looked up to you both,” one parent replied.

“I’m sure your kids would be proud,” said a fourth.

Others claimed that the podcast had veered from its original direction.

“I feel like you guys are trying too hard to get people’s attention about the podcast,” wrote one, while another said they were trying to copy the format of the popular Call Her Daddy podcast.

Thankfully, many came to the influencer’s defense and praised her for speaking so honestly.

“Love women who are honest about pleasure. Go girls!” cheered one.

“What about the normalization of sexual conversation! Ignore the haters,” another pointed out.
