The fought giant of the Intel chips is reportedly preparing to reduce by up to 20% of its global workforce next month – despite the company receiving more than $ 2 billion in federal funds under the act of former President Biden Chips.
The degree of dismissal, reaching about 10,000 employees, was discovered in an internal email viewed by Oregonian/Oregonlive and confirmed by four Intel employees who spoke about the release of the Internet news.
“These are difficult, but essential actions to meet our affordability challenges and the current financial position of the company. It drives the pain to every individual,” Naga Chandrasenan, the vice president of Intel, reportedly writing Saturday.
Estimated discounts are planned to start per week and will really affect Intel Foundry, the internal division of company production that specializes in the production of semiconductors for external customers.
The unit includes a wide spectrum of jobs – from factory technicians to engineers and researchers who design future generations of chips.
Intel was given $ 7.9 billion in federal subsidies last year to support the US -based semiconductor production under the act of chips. The company received $ 2.2 billion before the rest had been frozen receiving a review from the newlywed administration Trump.
Nearby cuts come at the top of 15,000 jobs throughout its global operations last year, after Intel Intel was given funds of the Act-AMID act declining the question for PCs and servers and obstacles to the development of high-level chips for the application of artificial intelligence.
The company has already delayed the opening of its $ 10 billion factory by 2030, citing insufficient demand.
Intel shares have fallen nearly 30% over the last 12 months, trading about $ 21.50 on Wednesday.
She overthrew CEO Pat Gelsinger in March and brought to the semiconductor veteran Lip-Bu Tan, who has highlighted adjustment operations, cutting bureaucracy and accelerating innovation.
“While I’m sure tariffs have some impacts on Intel’s vacation, this is actually simply simply – these holidays are great duo for the financial challenges Intel is facing in terms of falling back,” Matt Kimal, leading analyst in Moor Insights & Strategy Network World.
Intel first revealed his intention to reduce the account in April, but had not specified the depth of dismissal so far.
Chandrasekaren told Oregonian/Oregonlive that cuts would not include voluntary construction this time. Instead, Intel will make decisions based on performance evaluations, strategic advantages and operational needs.
“These landings will be based on a combination of portfolio changes, level and elimination of position, evaluation of remaining positions and some difficult decisions about our project investments,” he wrote.
“We are also considering the impact of operations on the factory.”
The post has requested comment from Intel.
Oregon’s factory workforce can be particularly struck. Intel is the largest private employer of the state, with 20,000 workers. The company also operates large manufacturing facilities in Arizona, New Mexico, Israel, Ireland and Malaysia.
Oregon gave Intel $ 115 million to state incentives, which can be captured again if the company fails to meet the objectives of job or taxation, then in a planned expansion of its D1X facility in Hillsboro.
Intel refused to comment in Oregonian/Oregonlive in Chandrasesen himself, but said the company remains focused on treating transition with respect.
“We will treat people with care and respect as we finish this important job,” the company said.
“Removing the organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will make us better serve the needs of our clients and strengthen our execution.”
Intel does not reveal exactly how many of its employees work in factory or production roles, but the evaluation can be derived from its overall work power and popular operations.
Since the end of 2024, the company reported that it had 109,000 employees globally. An important part of those workers are part of Intel Foundry.
The largest Intel production center is located in Oregon, where it employs approximately 20,000 people. However, not all of them are directly involved in the factory work. The company also operates large manufacturing facilities in Arizona, New Mexico, Israel, Ireland and Malaysia.
