Historical structure at the intersection of the third road and Avenue Avenue in Gowanus, Brooklyn climbs like a “stone” finger.
The building of the Coignet Stone, newly on sale for $ 2.99 million, is the earliest well -known concrete building in New York City. It was built in the 1870s as a functional advertisement for its own, New York & Long Island Coignet Stone Company, with many patent Cementimento Stone the company was desperately striving for New Yorkers.
The business did not survive the test of time, but their exhibition room – the type of permanent species type – did.
The building broker, Erica Nieves from Corcoran, described the current state of the building as “raw”.
“There is definitely a few TLCs,” Nieves said. “But if you are a person who knows the story of this, this knows that Gowanus is an Artsy neighborhood, then you can see the potential.”
The previous showcase structure includes 2,360 square meters in three levels, and boasts some of the expected details of the pre-war gems of the city that pet with 13 feet, arched windows, a curved staircase and corner.
“I’ve been spending this building for decades, and I know that many people in the neighborhood have been fighting for this building just to return,” Nieves said. And, indeed, this is the experience of many people – as the Gowanus which market which has very significantly embraces this historic structure that stands in the corner. The full road is also a bridge between the fashion gardens Gowanus and Quain Carroll, which means that the building has long received a crowd of passers -by who consider it a local landmark.
The United States Agglomerate Company was founded in 1869, according to a time of its Brownstoner history. Construction on its comprehensive officials and exhibition hall began in 1872. The bright white stone was a fierce departure from the typical brick facades and the stone stones of the City Hall.
The business was then renamed in New York and Long Island Coignet Stone Company, presented for bankruptcy shortly afterwards, in 1873. The building changed its hands many times.
The current owner of the construction company Coignet Stone won it in 1992, according to city data. The sales attempt in 2013 for $ 3 million and in 2019 for $ 5 million were unsuccessful.
Although the outside received a total refreshing, white washed in 2016, thanks to a commitment from its entire leg, the interior looks like the abandoned warehouse every day.
The zoning of the building with the landmark recently changed as much as yesterday, according to Nives. Instead of a mixed use property, the building now allows businesses, such as a restaurant, office or retreat.
The current sale coincides with an offer to rent the property, Nieves said.
“Everyone, for decades, have gone to this building and wondered what is inside,” Nieves said. “So to get a company, if it’s a restaurant, a store where people can keep the space, it would be phenomenal.”
