When should you put up a Christmas tree? Some celebrities have already done it, but here’s what the experts say

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas.

Celebrities all over the world are starting to put up their Christmas decor – but how early is too early?

Queer Eye’s Tan France shared that he and his family started decorating in October. 31, posted on Instagram that putting up the tree on Halloween is a tradition he’s been doing for 12 years.

But since Christmas is more than a month away, when should people in fact start decorating?

Traditionally, Christmas trees and decorations should be put up on the first day of Advent, or the fourth Sunday before Christmas, according to Country Living.

This year it falls in December. 1 – just days before the official Rockefeller Center tree lighting on Wednesday, Dec. 4, in New York City.

In the Christian calendar, Advent is the period before the birth of Christ, which ends on Christmas Eve.

But, of course, you can not refrain if you are ready early for the decoration of the halls.

“People are getting excited [for Christmas] earlier and earlier,” Etsy trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson told Martha Stewart’s site last month. “And we shouldn’t hold back anyone’s excitement about the holiday season, because it’s a time to celebrate friends and family and to spend quality time together.”

Different countries also have different styles. For example, in Italy, many families wait until the 15th to put up their trees, while in countries like Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the trees are shining on the sixth.

According to the British Christmas Tree Growers Association, no matter how much care you take, you’re likely to experience fallen needles and dry branches if you hang on to your living seasonal display for more than a month.

But if decorating for the holiday brings you joy, the American Christmas Tree Association won’t argue.

“Christmas decorations lift our spirits significantly!” says the association’s website. “An impressive 64% of consumers feel happier and more cheerful when their homes are decorated with festive decorations, while 57% look forward to the annual Christmas decorating tradition.

“Among the debates and discussions that fill our lives, there is one thing we can all agree on – the power and joy of Christmas.”
