I refused to stop using my ex-husband’s last name – now he and his new wife are mad at me

She’s making a name for herself now – with his.

A woman married to her husband of more than 25 years refuses to return his last name as he prepares to remarry.

Taking her tale to Reddit, the 56-year-old woman said the two “mutually agreed to separate” two years ago after her husband came out as gay – 26 years and two children later.

Recently, “he got engaged to an amazing guy” and the ex-wife has been “supportive of their relationship,” wrote the Reddit user, who used her ex-partner’s last name in legal records.

“But during my nephew’s birthday party, my ex suddenly asked me if I would consider removing his last name,” the woman added.

“His fiance called, saying it makes him uncomfortable that I still use it.”

She managed to avoid the investigation by joking that she had to go through so many branches of government to properly change her name around, but no one bought it.

“My ex didn’t laugh. He insisted it’s about starting a new chapter and wants me to ‘move on,’” the woman posted, noting it wasn’t a problem for two years.

“I countered that our kids still use the same name and it would feel weird for me to be weird.”

She also wrote that “fiancé feels threatened by my name” according to her youngest son, despite the woman making it clear she has “zero interest in rekindling anything.”

The ex also said that his fiancé sees him keeping the name as a “power play”.

“I told my ex I would consider it later – maybe after they were married and settled down. But now, he’s furious, saying I’m being condescending and selfish.”

While her children are divided over the matter, the woman’s friends are urging her to double down and hold the service to keep the name.

“I don’t understand why a name on some legal documents is such a big deal, but they’re making me feel like a villain.”

But online, the woman was fiercely defended as some could relate, at least to some extent, to her situation.

“I had my ex’s name for 22 years and his change is horrible,” commented one. “I have many things in this name, but as you said it is the name of your children and you will always be their mother. If the fiance has a problem, it’s too bad.”

Others pointed out that the name change has larger implications beyond their previous relationship.

“It’s not just his name, it’s also the children’s name. It’s your family name. This should honestly be a red flag to the fiance that he wants to change this,” wrote another.

Meanwhile, a third noted an easy alternative.

“He should take the fiancee’s name if there is such uncertainty about the man’s claim… it’s ridiculous to ask that.”
